Microsclerotherapy

What is Microsclerotherapy?

Microsclerotherapy is a cosmetic treatment. It is considered to be the icing on the cake in one’s treatment for Spider veins. Spider veins are very fine and red in colour and are caused by back pressure from reticular (branches) veins.

Reticular veins are slightly larger veins that lie just beneath the skin and are distinguishable by their slightly blue-green colour and tendency to form a central network “feeding” into or around an area of spider veins. Reticular veins require treatment when they have become inefficient in directing blood back to your heart and lead to back pressure, causing spider veins. Poor results and complications of treatment such as “matting” are often the result of failing to identify and properly treat these reticular veins.

It is important to understand that the various vein conditions are chronic, so there is a tendency for new veins to develop over time. You need to take this into consideration so expectations are managed correctly.

What to expect during your microsclerotherapy treatment?

  • Your Dr will use a syris magnifying headpiece, which has a polarising LED light that serves as a special vein magnifying tool. This tool allows your Doctor to locate the smallest of fine spider veins.
  • Tiny needles are used to inject liquid or foam solution directly into these small spider veins.
  • You may feel a mild burning sensation for a brief moment

What to expect during your microsclerotherapy aftercare?

  • You will be required to wear your medical grade compression stockings for a minimum of one week. The first 4 days, you must not take off your compression stockings. This means showering in them. The following 3 days, you can take your compression off to shower, but you must wear them during the day. You may sleep without your compression if you so desire.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure to treated areas for at least one month after treatment. This can cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Avoid strenuous activities or high-impact workouts for one week after treatment.
  • DO NOT take any hot baths, showers or sit in any hot tubs for one week after treatment.
  • Your spider veins will look worse before they look better. Give yourself 4-6 weeks before you judge your results.
  • It often takes more than 1 treatment to get the results you and your Doctor have discussed.

Blood flow in varicose veins

If you notice one or more bulging veins on your legs; this is an indication that valve damage has occurred to that vessel. Veins move blood and nutrients throughout the body and then back to the heart.

Muscle contractions in the legs help to progress the upward movement of blood against gravity. Veins have one-way flaps called valves to keep blood moving in the right direction. Weakness in a valve allows blood to accumulate, causing the vein to swell and bulge.
