Microphlebectomy

What is Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique in which very small incisions ( about 0.3 cm) are made in the skin. Through these tiny incisions, the varicose veins are removed in segments disrupting the continuity of the leaky vein.

It is an efficient method when done in experienced hands as it leads to better cosmetic results. There will be decreased staining of the skin and less “lumpiness“ from veins being treated with sclerosants.

Microphlebectomy is performed on a walk-in walk-out basis at our clinic. Post treatment, you can return to normal activities immediately, with a one week break from strenuous exercise.

What to expect during your microphlebectomy procedure?

  • Photos of your legs will be taken prior to treatment.
  • You will be measured for medical grade compression stockings.
  • With ultrasound guidance and through a series of small injections, local anaesthesia will be used to numb the area around the vein that needs to be removed.

What to expect post your microphlebectomy?

  • You will be required to wear your medical grade compression stockings for a minimum of one week. The first 4 days, you must not take off your compression stockings. This means showering in them. The following 3 days, you can take your compression off to shower, although you must wear them during the day. You may sleep without your compression if you so desire.
  • Avoid strenuous activities or high-impact workouts for one week after treatment.
  • Give yourself 4-6 weeks before you judge your results.
