What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)?
Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (UGS) is a procedure where injections are done for the treatment of reticular veins (the branches) using an ultrasound for guidance.
Sclerotherapy is the process of injecting a sclerosant into a vein. The sclerosant causes a small amount of chemical damage to the wall of the vein which then causes the walls to stick together, resulting in the closure of the vein. The blood is then re-routed to healthier veins without damaged valves, leading to improved circulation. Aftеr the insertion of sclerosant, pressure is applied over the veins to prevent blood pooling in the vein when you stand up.
The ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy procedure does not require hospitalisation and recovery time is minimal. Patients will need to wear compression stockings and walk daily to promote blood flow to prevent superficial venous thrombosis and skin changes.
What to expect during your sclerotherapy treatment?
- Under ultrasound guidance, your Doctor will locate the veins that need to be treated. Using very fine needles, a liquid or foam solution will be injected directly into the veins that are being treated. You may feel a mild burning sensation for a brief moment.
- The number of veins your Doctor treats in one session depends on the size and location of your veins, as well as your overall medical condition.
- Medical grade compression stockings are worn for 7-10 days post treatment.
What to expect post your sclerotherapy treatment?
- You will be required to wear your medical grade compression stockings for a minimum of one week. The first 4 days, you must not take off your compression stockings. This means showering in them. The following 3 days, you can take your compression off to shower, but you must wear them during the day. You may sleep without your compression if you so desire.
- Note, your legs will look ‘worse’ before they look better.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure to treated areas for at least one month after treatment. This can cause hyperpigmentation.
- Avoid strenuous activities or high-impact workouts for one week after treatment.
- DO NOT take any hot baths, showers or sit in any hot tubs for one week after treatment.
- DO NOT be overly sedentary during your recovery.
- You will be required to take two daily 30 minute walks for one week post treatment.
